The phenomenon started 4 years ago, and nowadays, unfortunately, everybody in the Basque Country and maybe in Spain, knows about the “Altsasu Case”. This large, political, judicial and mediatic process started on 15th October, 2016. Since that party night, many things have happened in that town, and now, the producer Baleuko is reflecting all that behind the cameras. The serie is based in the real story of 8 young people, who were accused of terrorism due to a fight in a bar.
The process
That night four years ago, when the festivities of the little town were being celebrated, some young people and two Civil Guards had a fight in a bar. From that day on, a huge process started and it is still occurring. One month after the argument, they arrested some young people of the town and accused them of terrorism. They sent them to different prisons in Madrid and two months later some of them were released. The town was mobilized, many people went to the streets to ask for justice and freedom and the case became famous. Finally, in the trial, the judge declared that wasn´t terrorism but this people went to jail anyway. Nowadays, some of them got the third degree and are partially free, but the others are still in prison.
This last four years we have heard different people talking about this: politicians, journalists, panelists, Civil Guards, the parents of the accused ones… But we have never seen or listened to them. They have been the protagonists of this story since the first minute but they have been in silence.
This serie will be the first opportunity to hear them and feel what they felt. We can put in their shoes and see what is like to see your youth ruined, to be a prisoner before you reach your 20s, to feel that you can’t defend yourself and to see that people is making politics with your life.
Four chapters of 50 minutes are expected to be release from 7th December on. Eider Gabilondo, the production manager, analyzes: “Each of them hide their story to protect themselves, but behind each name there is a person who suffers and feels that their life stopped belonging them. They are dummies of the justice”. She also highlights that it is a story narrated from the emotions. This miniserie wants to cause the audience’s reflection.
The plot
The storyline starts that night of festivities and finishes with the trial. The script is written by Harkatiz Cano, Mikel Álvarez, Andoni de Carlos and Asier Urbieta. They told us that there are three principal storylines: the one of the accused people, the familiars and the judicial one. There are other secondary stories narrated at the same time: life in Altsasu, the public outcry, and the Civil Guards story. The principal sceneries will be the jail, different locations of the town and the building “Gure Etxea”.
ETB1 has made the bet with fiction in basque language with “Altsasu”, “Alardea” which already has been released, and “Hondar Ahoak”. We will see “Altsasu” on the screen next 7th of december with known veteran actors as well as young actors, who will embody the main characters.
